Hot Under the Collar: What’s Really Behind Your Dog’s Hot Spots?

by Heather Murphy

Understanding the Causes of Hot Spots on Dogs.

Hot spots, also known as pyoderma, pyo traumatic dermatitis, acute moist dermatitis or heat rashes are painful, red, inflamed areas of skin that can appear suddenly. These lesions are often moist and may exude pus, causing discomfort and itching. Hot spots can develop rapidly (I watched 3 of these appear on Coco’s skin in 12 hours) and they require prompt attention – they are intensely itchy and painful and cannot go untreated.

Understanding the causes of hot spots is essential for prevention:

  • Allergic Reactions: One of the most common triggers for hot spots in dogs is allergies. Dogs can be allergic to a variety of substances, as many of us know, and hot spots can be brought on by allergies to foods and environmental allergens like pollen, or flea bites. When a dog is exposed to an allergen, it scratches or licks the affected area excessively, which in turn damages the skin’s surface. This damage creates an entry point for bacteria which can lead to infection and the formation of a hot spot. Add in some humidity or moisture and you have the perfect climate for bacteria to grow
  • Parasites: Parasites like fleas and ticks, can cause itching and irritation that may lead to hot spots .Flea allergies are particularly notorious for causing hot spots, as the intense itching from flea bites can lead to persistent licking and biting. A single flea bite can trigger intense itching, especially in dogs that have a flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). Remember it’s the saliva of the flea that can cause a reaction – so just one bite can set a FAD off to full blown rashes or can create hot spots on your dog
  • Poor Grooming or Moisture Dogs with thick, dense or long fur, particularly those that are not regularly groomed, are more prone to developing hot spots. When a dog’s coat is matted or wet, moisture becomes trapped against the skin, moistness is the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. Warm, humid conditions can also exasperate the condition. Dogs that spend a lot of time in water or are not dried off properly afterward can develop hot spots in areas where the skin remains damp.
  • Infection Once the skin is broken from excessive licking, biting, or scratching bacteria can enter and cause infection. Basically little bacterial highways are created so It is easy for hot spots to become infected, they are often painful, sometimes swollen, and may discharge pus or fluid. One of the key signs of a hot spot is a little cluster of tiny pimples in a circular shape and you will have hair loss from the intense itching

      Take control

The vicious cycle of lick, bite, scratch, lick, bite, scratch just makes things worse. You need to break the itch/scratch cycle – it is important to halt the itch so you can stop the infection and spread.

Having a product to pop on the skin immediately you see a hot spot developing is paramount. The beauty of our product Eezapet is that this can be applied immediately – you don’t need to shave the area but you do need to apply Eezapet to the whole area.

Eezapet soothes the skin almost immediately and breaks the itch/scratch cycle which in turn allows the skin to heal.

“Seriously this stuff is the shizz. Last year we spent well over $1500 at the vets on hotspots and this year all we have spent is the price for the pot of Eezapet” Chelles
