How to Support an Itchy Dog – Naturally: what worked for our allergy dogs

In this blog, we share some of our most trusted tips—tried and tested over the years—for naturally supporting dogs with itchy skin. These methods can avoid weakening a dog's system, which in turn can prevent rashes, itching, scratching, and licking. Just good nutrients, combined with beneficial properties from Mother Nature to help support your dog's health.

Itchy dogs

Many of you know that we’ve had two out of three itchy dogs. Of course, Coco was the first and the reason we launched our signature balm, Eezapet, to relieve itchiness in dogs. Then came along No2 - Bhindi - who surpassed anything that Coco had and became a severe allergy dog.

With Bhindi, though, we knew stress was a major contributor. Her gut was under stress (leaky gut), which in turn led to mental stress (reactivity). She was yin deficient, meaning she was a “hot” dog that didn’t have enough coolant (yin). Heat and rashes go hand in hand. She then developed multiple allergic responses and became allergic to everything environmental. Her body was constantly overloaded by normal day-to-day living, and we had to try to support her as naturally as we could so as not to cause any further stress.

Defending Your Dog’s Health

The best thing is that this made me research in depth what was going on with our dogs, what they needed for support, and what beneficial things could help.

We choose natural ingredients to avoid further weakening a dog's immune system. When a dog's system becomes overloaded with too many additions, it can reach a breaking point. This is when the whole system collapses, showing up as rashes, itching, scratching, and excessive licking. In many of the examples listed below, you are supporting your dog through good nutrients along with the individual properties that are beneficial - things Mother Nature provides us.

Support the gut

Of course raw food is one of the important replacements, with kibble being a dry and a heat generating food that's the last thing an allergy dog needs - they don't need more heat and they don't need dehydrating foods they need cooling and moisture. When 80% of a dog's immunity comes from the gut supporting it through good food is key.

Support the skin & coat

Fish oil - we use Newflands Hoki Oil

Wild and sustainable caught fish. Omega-3's can promote a healthy, shiny coat and reduce dryness. Hoki oil is easily digestible and palatable.

We have used for a number of years and seen great results: shiney, healthy coats, supporting our dogs with itchy skin internally.

Flea protection that works

Not using chemical flea treatments is important for us so as not to overload a dog's system further. With Bhindi having a flea allergy dermatitis it was important that fleas stayed away.

With many treatments; fleas have to bite the dog to ingest the poison to die. But it's the bite (saliva) that can cause an allergic reaction. We moved to Pawtect Flea Deter Pendants a number of years ago to support Bhindi and do no harm. These are fantastic at keeping fleas away from your pet and last between 1-2 years ( pet health dependant)

Skin relief

And of course we have Eezapet - our balm used by thousands to control the itch. No running away from stinging products - in fact it's the opposite dogs come running forEezapet. Another product that does no harm. Made with beeswax, sesame oil and herbs-  it stops the itch, breaks the itch/scratch cycle, no more secondary rashes, no more sleepless nights, no more itchy dog.

What We Use For Our Allergy Dogs -  Naturally

From carrots to pumpkin, kelp to olive leaf, raw food to chia seeds these are all things we use to support the allergy dog and try and regain optimum health.

Carrots for parasites, pumpkin for ibs, kelp for teeth, chia seeds as prebiotic. All these support the dog as opposed to many things that ‘overload’ the dog:
These are just some methods we use to help and support the allergy dog without doing any harm. You might consider introducing some of these natural options into your dog's routine too.
Itchy and allergy dogs need to be supported. So many things that we do and give them, weakens them further so giving good natural support  eases the system and benefits them whether internally or externally

We write many blogs with tips on managing allergies at home
